Lando Norris Claims First Silverstone Victory in Chaotic Rain-Hit British Grand Prix

Lando Norris has won races on consecutive weekends after his victory in Austria a week ago

Silverstone, UK — July 7, 2025 — In what may go down as one of the most dramatic and emotionally charged Formula 1 races in recent memory, McLaren’s Lando Norris took home his first-ever British Grand Prix victory at his home circuit, Silverstone. The race was marked by heavy rain, multiple safety cars, and controversial penalties — but it was Norris who emerged victorious after an edge-of-your-seat finale.

With a record crowd of over 168,000 fans on race day and a staggering 500,000 over the weekend, the atmosphere was electric as Lando Norris crossed the finish line, visibly emotional. He described the win as “beautiful,” and his radio messages after the race suggested he was crying in his helmet.

“Apart from a championship, I think this is as good as it gets in terms of feelings and achievement,” said Norris. “These are memories I’ll bring with me forever.”

The victory significantly closes the championship gap to just eight points between Norris and his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had led most of the race until a late 10-second penalty.

🏎️ Penalty Drama: Piastri's Costly Mistake

Oscar Piastri, who had delivered a commanding performance in the rain and led the race confidently through two safety car periods, was handed a 10-second time penalty for erratic driving during the restart on lap 22. The Australian had slowed suddenly on the Hangar Straight in poor visibility conditions, confusing Max Verstappen, who momentarily passed him before spinning at Stowe.

“Apparently you can't brake behind the safety car anymore,” said Piastri. “I did it for five laps before that.”

Piastri’s pit stop to serve the penalty in the final laps allowed Norris to take the lead and hold it to the end.

🥉 Hulkenberg Makes History

In one of the day’s biggest surprises, Nico Hulkenberg clinched his first-ever Formula 1 podium finish in his 239th Grand Prix — a record for the longest wait before achieving a top-three result. Starting from 19th on the grid, the Sauber driver executed a brilliant race strategy and defended against Lewis Hamilton to claim third.

“Coming from almost last, it was surreal. I was in denial until the last pit stop,” said Hulkenberg. “When we gapped Lewis, I knew — this is my day.”

⚠️ Safety Cars, Spins, and Soaked Circuits

The race began under damp conditions following morning rain. Max Verstappen maintained his lead off the line but couldn’t hold off McLaren's charge. Piastri passed Verstappen shortly after the first virtual safety car period caused by Gabriel Bortoleto's crash at Turn Two.

Verstappen struggled in the wet, sliding off at Becketts and eventually spinning again following the restart after the second safety car. Though he recovered to finish fifth, he now trails in the championship by 69 points, as McLaren continues to assert dominance.

Two safety cars were deployed — one on lap 14 and another on lap 18, following a crash between Isack Hadjar and Kimi Antonelli. The final restart on lap 22 saw the penalty incident involving Piastri, shaping the race's ultimate outcome.
